How to Check Local Keyword Rankings by City
How do you check local keyword positions?
Local rankings change from city to city, so a country-level check is only a starting point. To see what nearby customers see, check from that city, read the map pack separately from organic results, and use your Business Profile data.
Quick verdict: Check the map pack and organic results separately, from the city your customers search in.

For searches with local intent, such as "electrician in Leeds" or "coffee near me", Google shows a map with business listings and, below it, regular organic results. The map pack ranks Google Business Profiles using relevance, distance and prominence. The organic list ranks web pages.
A business can do well in one and poorly in the other, so track both.
Ways to check a city
Four methods check a city ranking. Add the city to the keyword, read Google Business Profile performance, use a city-level rank tracker with precise locations, or ask someone in the area to search in a private window on their phone.
- Search with the city in the keyword: "plumber Manchester" shows a reasonable view of that market even from elsewhere, though it is not identical to a searcher standing there.
- Google Business Profile performance: shows the searches that led people to your profile and the actions they took.
- City-level rank trackers: some tools let you set a precise location or a grid of points around your business.
- Ask someone local: a private window on a phone in the target area is still a useful sanity check.
Where a country-level check fits
Our free checker works at country level. It is ideal for non-local keywords and for seeing which websites compete nationally, but it does not simulate a city. For UK businesses, the Google UK rank checker gives the national Google.co.uk view.
Improving local visibility
Local visibility improves through four habits. Complete your Business Profile with accurate categories, hours and photos, keep name, address and phone consistent across directories, publish pages for areas you genuinely serve, and earn and answer genuine reviews from real customers.
- Complete your Business Profile with accurate categories, hours and photos.
- Keep your name, address and phone number consistent across directories.
- Create pages for the areas you actually serve, with real local detail.
- Earn reviews from real customers and reply to them.

Common mistakes
Three mistakes skew local rank checks: searching from your own business location, treating the map pack and organic results as one ranking, and adding the city name to every query, which hides how nearby searchers see results without typing it.
- Checking only from your own premises.
- Merging map pack and organic positions.
- Always adding the city name to the keyword.
