Best Keyword Position Checkers: Free and Paid Tools Compared
What is the best keyword position checker?
The best keyword position checker depends on the job. A free web checker suits a quick check of one keyword, Google Search Console gives real data for your own sites, and rank tracking software suits many keywords that you track daily.
Quick verdict: Start with Search Console and our free checker. Pick a suite for research needs, or Pro for many sites without a subscription.

How we compared
We compared keyword position checkers on data source, keyword capacity, personalization, engine coverage and cost model. We skipped timed accuracy tests, because live results legitimately change by location, device and time, so a single test run would mislead more than inform.
We looked at where each tool's data comes from, how many keywords it handles, whether results are personalized, which engines it covers, and the cost model.
We did not run timed accuracy tests, because live results legitimately change by location, device and time; see why rankings look different.
The tools
The eight tools fall into four groups: free sources such as Search Console and our checker, free multi-keyword web tools, pay-per-request SERP APIs, and paid trackers sold either as subscriptions or as a one-time license. Each tool section covers data source, limits, cost and fit.
Google Search Console (free)
Google Search Console reports clicks, impressions, CTR and average position for every query where your verified site appeared. It is the most authoritative ranking data for sites you own, it costs nothing, and every site owner should connect it before choosing any other rank checker.
Search Console data comes from real searches, not simulated ones. That makes it the best source for discovering queries you never thought to check, including long-tail variations and questions.
The trade-off is averaging. Each position blends every country, device and day in the date range, so it rarely matches a single live check. Our guide to how Search Console average position is calculated explains why the two numbers differ.
Search Console has two hard limits. It only covers properties you have verified, so it cannot check a competitor domain. It also only lists queries with impressions, so a brand new page with no impressions yet shows nothing.
In practice, Search Console works best as the base layer. Use it weekly to find striking distance queries in positions 11 to 20, then confirm important keywords with a neutral live check in the market you care about.
Best for: every site owner, as the free foundation for all other ranking tools.
Keyword Position Checker (free, ours)
Keyword Position Checker is our free web tool. It checks one keyword per run, allows 3 checks per day, covers 18 country markets and scans the top 100 desktop organic results. It also lists the ten pages that rank first, and it needs no sign-up.
Each check requests a non-personalized Google results page through DataForSEO, so your own history and signed-in account do not shape the number. Ads and map listings are not counted, which matches how SEO tools usually report positions.
The result names the exact URL that ranks. When that URL is a different page than the one you optimized, you have found a cannibalization or internal linking problem worth fixing.
The limits are deliberate. One keyword per check and 3 checks per day keep the tool free, and identical checks are cached for up to 24 hours. It reports desktop results, which are usually close to mobile but not always identical.
The checker works for any domain, including competitors, which Search Console cannot do. That makes it a good second opinion when a Search Console average looks odd, or when you want to see who outranks you in another country.
Best for: quick, neutral checks of any domain in one market. Run one on the free Google rank checker.
Small SEO Tools Keyword Position Checker (free)
Small SEO Tools offers a free keyword position checker that accepts several keywords per check, one per line, with a choice of Google country domains. It belongs to a large set of free SEO utilities and suits checking a short keyword list in one pass.
The workflow is simple. You enter a domain, paste a list of keywords and choose a Google country domain, and the tool returns a position for each keyword in the list.
Its main strength is list size per run. Where our free checker reads one keyword at a time, Small SEO Tools can cover a short batch in one go, which saves time on a quick audit of ten or twenty terms.
Its main gap is context. The results show your position number for each keyword, but not the competing pages that rank above you. It also keeps no history, so every visit starts from zero.
Free multi-keyword tools also tend to cap the keywords per run and show captchas between runs. That makes them a poor fit for hundreds of keywords or for daily tracking across several sites.
Our Small SEO Tools alternative page compares it with our two tools in more detail.
Best for: short keyword lists checked once, without an account.
RankTank (Google Sheets, subscription)
RankTank is a rank checker inside Google Sheets, as a template sheet or as a Google Workspace add-on. Its site describes desktop and mobile user agents, scan depth up to 100, search volume, a free trial allowance and paid monthly plans for larger use.
The spreadsheet model is RankTank's main advantage. Keywords live in a column, results land in the next columns, and the data sits next to whatever reporting you already build in Sheets.
The desktop and mobile user agent option matters for sites with heavy phone traffic, because mobile and desktop rankings can differ. Scan depth up to 100 covers the same range as most dedicated checkers.
The cost model is a subscription. The free trial allowance suits a test run, and larger keyword volumes move you to a paid monthly plan, so the total cost grows with every month you keep tracking.
Spreadsheet tracking also needs some discipline. You decide when checks run, how history is stored and how charts are built, which suits analysts but adds setup work for beginners.
Check the RankTank site for current limits and plan prices before you commit, because spreadsheet tools change their allowances over time.
Best for: spreadsheet users with large keyword lists who already report in Google Sheets.
SERP APIs (pay per request)
SERP APIs such as DataForSEO return live Google results as structured data, so developers can check any keyword for any domain at scale. Providers charge per request, and our own free checker uses DataForSEO this way to read the top 100 organic results.
A SERP API request takes a keyword, a location and a language. The response lists the organic items with positions, URLs and titles, and your script searches those items for the domain you care about.
The flexibility is the selling point. You choose the keywords, the markets, the schedule and the storage, and the same method covers competitor domains that Search Console cannot show.
The costs are the catch. Every request costs money, so repeated identical calls waste budget. Cache results, run checks on a fixed schedule and avoid testing loops against the live endpoint.
Building on an API also means maintaining code, credentials and storage. That is a fair trade for teams that want custom dashboards, and a poor one for people who only want to see rankings.
Our keyword position API guide includes a PHP example for DataForSEO and a request for the Search Console API.
Best for: development teams that want to build their own rank tracking.
Chrome extensions
Chrome rank checking extensions number the results on Google's page as you browse, which makes them the fastest way to glance at a position. They read the page your browser received, so your personalization, location and signed-in history all shape the numbers they report.
The speed is real. You search a keyword, and the extension labels each organic result with its position, with no form to fill in and no daily limit.
The accuracy problem is structural. Sites you visit often can look higher to you than they rank for a new visitor, and your city shifts results for anything with local intent.
An incognito window reduces the personalization, although location still applies. Extensions also only see the number of results your browser loaded, so deep positions need extra pages or settings.
Extensions keep no reliable history either. Each reading reflects one browser at one moment, which makes week to week comparisons unreliable compared with a neutral checker or Search Console.
Treat extension numbers as a rough guide, then confirm the keywords that matter with a neutral check. Our guide on why rankings look different by location and device explains the effects.
Best for: rough, instant looks while you browse Google.
All-in-one SEO suites
All-in-one SEO suites bundle rank tracking with keyword research, site audits and backlink data, usually as monthly subscriptions. Many add multi-engine and city-level tracking. They suit teams that need the whole toolkit, and they cost the most per year of any option here.
Two published prices show the scale. The SE Ranking pricing page lists its Core plan at $129 per month, or $103.20 per month billed annually, with 2,000 keywords tracked daily. The AccuRanker pricing page lists its Professional plan at $224 per month.
Those plans include far more than rank tracking, such as live rank updates for any domain, research data and reporting. The question is whether you use those extras, or mainly need positions for your own sites.
Suites track keywords you add by hand, often with daily refreshes and competitor tracking. That covers new pages and competitor domains that Search Console data cannot show.
The recurring cost is the trade-off. Every month adds to the total, and keyword allowances cap how far one plan stretches across many client sites.
If Bing or Yahoo traffic matters to you, also read how to check Bing and Yahoo rankings before you pick a suite.
Best for: teams that need research, audits and tracking in one subscription.
Keyword Position Checker & Tracker Pro (Windows, ours)
Keyword Position Checker and Tracker Pro is our Windows desktop app. It syncs Search Console for unlimited sites, keywords and Google accounts, with momentum charts, a Priority Watchlist, approved-only volume lookups and indexing tools, for a one-time $499, or $299 with EARLYBIRD.
Pro reads every query from the Search Console API, so you never paste a keyword list. Each keyword shows today's and yesterday's position, ranking tier, clicks, impressions and momentum, and every column sorts.
The portfolio dashboard totals impressions, page one rankings and striking distance keywords across all sites. Each site gets a primary country from 249 countries and territories.
Volume lookups run through your own DataForSEO account. Pro shows the cost first and spends nothing without approval, and a spending history lists every lookup.
The honest limit is the data source. Because Pro reads Search Console, it shows keywords where your site already has impressions, and it cannot track competitor domains. Use a live checker for brand new pages and competitors.
The license covers 3 PCs for life, with updates. See the full feature list on the Pro app page.
Best for: people managing many sites who prefer one payment to a monthly subscription.
