How to Check Keyword Position on Android and iPhone

By Keyword Position Checker. Updated October 26, 2026.

How do you check keyword position in the Google app?

On a phone, the most reliable way to check a keyword position is a private browser tab or a web-based rank checker, not the Google app. The Google app is tied to your account and history, so it tends to show a personalized order.

For mobile-specific averages, use the Device filter in Search Console.

Quick verdict: A private browser tab works for one mobile spot check. Search Console's mobile filter gives the reliable average across real phone searches.

Why the Google app is a poor rank checker

The Google app makes a poor rank checker because it signs in to your Google account and uses your search history. Sites you visit often rank higher for you than for new visitors, and the app cannot show results from another country.

The Google app on Android and iOS is signed in to your Google account by default and uses your search and browsing activity. Sites you visit often can appear higher for you than for a new visitor.

It also has no way to show results for another country, so it only tells you what you, personally, see right now.

On Android

On Android, open Chrome, start a new Incognito tab, search your keyword on google.com and count organic listings until you reach your own site. Incognito removes your signed-in history, although your phone's location still shapes local results in the list.

  1. Open Chrome and start a new Incognito tab from the menu.
  2. Go to google.com and search your keyword.
  3. Scroll past ads, the map pack and other boxes, and count the organic listings until you reach your site.

On iPhone and iPad

On an iPhone or iPad, open a Private tab in Safari or an Incognito tab in Chrome, search the keyword on google.com and count organic listings only. Phone screens show fewer results at once, so keep a careful tally while you scroll.

  1. Open Safari and switch to a Private tab, or use Chrome's Incognito tab.
  2. Search your keyword on google.com.
  3. Count organic listings only. Mobile pages show fewer results per screen, so keep a careful tally.

Use a rank checker in your phone's browser

The free keyword position checker runs in any mobile browser, with no app to install. It reads a clean, non-personalized Google results page for the country you pick. Note that it reports desktop organic positions, which are usually close to mobile but not always identical.

Get mobile averages from Search Console

In the Search Console Performance report, add a Device filter and choose Mobile. You will see average position, clicks and impressions from real phone searches. Compare it with the Desktop filter to see whether your page performs differently on phones.

What changes on mobile

Mobile results change in three ways. Ads, AI Overviews and local packs fill more of the first screen, page speed and usability weigh more under mobile-first indexing, and phone location is more precise, which shifts local results between nearby areas.

  • Ads, AI Overviews and local packs fill more of the first screen, so a top-five result may still need scrolling.
  • Page speed and mobile usability matter more, because Google indexes the mobile version of your pages.
  • Location is often more precise on phones, which shifts local results.
